Bournemouth's Friday Fireworks only last a few minutes. What locals understand is that those minutes are the finale rather than the whole point of the evening. Build the night around them properly and a free 10pm display turns into the backbone of one of the simplest great evenings anywhere on the south coast. What follows sets out the plan, in a few different versions.
The classic evening: dinner, a walk, then the sky
Reserve a table for 7.30pm or 8pm somewhere you can walk to the front from. Your options include the seafront strip itself, the town centre a five-minute walk back, or Key West out on the pier, where Fridays bring half-price fish and chips all day, plus free live music running through the evening beneath the display on 31 July, 14 August, 21 August and 28 August.
Take your time over the meal, pay the bill by 9.15pm, and head down as daylight fades. That last half hour before the display is arguably the best part: the bay deepening to navy, the pier lights switching on, the beach gradually filling with rugs and anticipation. An evening built around the family
Work the evening in reverse order. Head to the beach in the late afternoon once the sand has cooled and thinned out. Have an early dinner around 6pm somewhere relaxed near the front. After that, let the promenade provide the entertainment until the display begins: the aviary end of the Lower Gardens, an ice cream, a full end-to-end walk along the pier.
The only real difficulty with young children is the 10pm start, so treat it as the one-off holiday event that it is. Pack ear defenders for anyone sensitive to noise, a jumper apiece regardless of how warm the day has been, and choose a viewing spot with a quick way out, the east beach or the promenade, so tired legs get straight home once the last burst fades. Planning it as a date
There are two directions to take this, depending on what suits you. For something livelier, book a table on Key West's terrace for a live-music Friday, over the water, a band playing, the sky lighting up right on cue. For something calmer, have dinner in town, then climb to the East Cliff, where the display opens into a panorama over the bay and the crowd thins to couples and photographers. Whichever you choose, walk home through the lit gardens afterwards. They have been quietly setting the mood for Bournemouth romances since Victorian times.
The practical details
Whatever shape the evening takes, the practicalities stay the same. Choosing the bus over the car makes sense: services keep running late into the town centre, fares are low, and the 10.20pm rush out of the seafront car parks ruins the end of most people's night. Bring layers, since the sea breeze turns sharp the moment the sun disappears, even during August. Displays also depend on the weather, so check ahead if the forecast looks rough; with six Fridays running from 24 July to 28 August, one postponed evening still leaves plenty of chances.
