Every autumn the Bournemouth Marathon Festival turns the seafront into a running course, making it one of the south coast's largest mass-participation running weekends. Thousands of runners tackle a route that makes full use of the promenade, clifftops and views across the bay.
Something for every distance
Races are spread across the two days, running from the headline marathon and half marathon down to a 10K, 5K and shorter children's events. That range turns the weekend into as much a family occasion as a serious test for runners.
Cheering from the sidelines
Watching costs nothing, and the seafront and clifftops provide plenty of spots to cheer the runners past. Much of the appeal lies in the atmosphere along the promenade, with bands, supporters and sea air all part of the mix.
Planning your visit
Expect road closures near the seafront on race days, so build in extra time and look at the route beforehand. Once the runners are underway, a walk out along Bournemouth Pier or breakfast close by makes a good pairing with race morning.
