Hotels in Bournemouth

The West Cliff and East Cliff, on the clifftops either side of the town centre, hold the largest number of hotels within a short walk of both beach and shops. The town centre is convenient for nightlife and the railway station, and Boscombe and Southbourne to the east are quieter, more local seaside neighbourhoods. Many of the bigger hotels on the West Cliff and East Cliff have rooms facing Poole Bay, since their clifftop position puts them directly above the promenade. A sea-view room usually costs a little more than one at the back, so ask for one specifically when booking rather than assuming it is included.

Some have their own on-site or valet parking, but plenty of town-centre and clifftop properties depend on nearby public car parks because of where they are. Most hotels on the West Cliff, East Cliff and in the town centre are a 5 to 15 minute walk from the seafront, although the clifftop ones reach the sand by zig-zag paths or the cliff lifts. Bournemouth Beach runs for miles, so choose an area first and nearly any hotel in it will be a short walk from the water.

Budget and mid-range hotels gather around the town centre and the cliffs and suit short breaks where you are out most of the day. Boutique hotels, often on the East Cliff and close to the gardens, invest more in design, spa facilities and food, and suit couples or a special occasion. Both are near the same beaches.

Yes. Several of the larger clifftop hotels have pools, spas and leisure facilities, and the top end of the market has grown: The Nici on the West Cliff, the resort-style reinvention of the former Savoy, combines an outdoor pool with a full spa. Facilities differ a great deal between properties, so filter for what matters and confirm the details with the hotel when you book.

A good many are. Bournemouth is a popular place for a holiday with a dog and hotels at every price point accept them, sometimes for a small nightly charge. Rates drop noticeably outside school holidays and event weekends. Midweek stays in late autumn, winter and early spring are usually the best value, and the mild local climate keeps an off-season visit pleasant. Even in summer, travelling Sunday to Thursday softens the price compared with a weekend.

A hotel gives you daily housekeeping and reception cover, which suits a short break where you are out all day. An aparthotel trades some of that for a kitchen, a living space and usually a washing machine.
