Bakehouse 24 is an artisan bakery and café on Southbourne Grove, the main shopping street through this part of Bournemouth, set just back from the clifftop. It's the sister branch of the original Bakehouse24 bakery in Ringwood, and further sites have since opened in Lyndhurst and Milford-on-Sea.
Fresh sourdough every day
The business was started by Pete, a baker who trained at one of London's bakeries before coming home to Ringwood to open his own. That background is evident in the approach: traditional sourdough methods, long fermentation and a preference for locally sourced, organic ingredients where possible, with no shortcuts. Bread, pastries and cakes are baked fresh daily, and the Southbourne branch has built enough of a following that a queue at the counter on a weekend morning is nothing unusual.
And the coffee
To go with the baking, Bakehouse 24 serves coffee from Bad Hand Coffee, a specialty roaster. Good bread and good coffee together have become the café's signature, as a morning stop or a slower weekend breakfast.
Practical details
The Southbourne café opens Tuesday to Saturday from 8am to 3pm and Sunday from 9am to 1pm, and takes Mondays off. It's at 50 Southbourne Grove, BH6 3RB, a short walk from the beach and the clifftop gardens, so it fits well before or after time on the sand. Alongside its cafés, the business runs a wholesale operation supplying bread and pastries to restaurants, cafés and shops across the New Forest, Bournemouth and Poole.
