Beirut Lounge has traded on Old Christchurch Road since 1992, and on a street where businesses come and go faster than almost anywhere else in Dorset, that longevity means something. The road runs the whole length of Bournemouth town centre, from the Lansdowne down towards the Square. This is a family-run Lebanese restaurant with a simple premise: order plenty of small plates, set them in the centre of the table and take your time.
The food
The cooking stays traditionally Lebanese, with the mezze list at its heart. More than 36 mezze dishes are offered, divided into hot and cold, together with around 18 main courses, and all of it is cooked to order rather than kept warm under a lamp. A meal here therefore works best when the whole table orders together and grazes, much as you would at a Mediterranean tapas evening, with plates arriving in waves instead of formal courses.
Two features make this an unusually easy menu to plan around. Every piece of meat is halal, and roughly half the dishes are vegetarian, vegan options included. For a mixed group that balance is properly useful, because nobody is left with one token dish. Nor is the food especially hot; it relies on herbs, lemon, garlic, olive oil and slowly built flavour rather than chilli, so cautious and adventurous eaters are equally well served. The setting
This is a proper sit-down dining room, not a fast-turnover canteen, and it has been laid out to be adaptable: private parties, receptions and corporate events regularly take it over. The mood is unhurried and relaxed, which is exactly what a mezze meal calls for, and it suits a dinner for two as comfortably as a birthday table of twelve. Bournemouth Square, the Pavilion and the top of the Lower Gardens are all a few minutes away on foot, and Bournemouth railway station is roughly ten to fifteen minutes' walk. Buses stop nearby along Old Christchurch Road and around the Lansdowne, while drivers will find the town centre car parks the natural choice.
