Bistro on the Beach was, for many years, among the most familiar addresses on the Southbourne seafront: a bistro set beneath the clifftop on the promenade itself, where every table had a view of the sea. It closed in autumn 2021 and the building was demolished afterwards. SoBo Beach now occupies the site while a permanent redevelopment is planned, so treat this page as a record of what used to be here and a guide to where you can eat on the beach today.
How the bistro closed
The final service was on 31 October 2021. The building had come to the end of its working life, and it was pulled down the following winter under BCP Council's plans for the Southbourne seafront. A temporary venue, SoBo Beach, opened on the site in spring 2022 and has remained there while a bigger permanent scheme moves forward: a new restaurant with a takeaway kiosk, better facilities and a row of beach lodges. The timetable for that permanent build has changed more than once, so check with BCP Council or the current operator for the latest position.
What it served
The bistro made the most of its position by the water. Seafood was the main attraction: fish and chips, calamari, crab and smoked salmon came up again and again, with salads, meat dishes and a changing handful of specials beside them. Breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea ran through the day, dinner was served on certain evenings during the warmer months, and there were vegetarian dishes plus puddings such as lemon pie. Prices sat in the middle of the range; this was easy-going, generous cooking for a day at the beach rather than fine dining.
Its position on the front
Much of the appeal came from where it stood. Set at the foot of the slopes off Southbourne Coast Road and directly on the promenade, the bistro gave its tables an uninterrupted view across the water. It held a full licence, welcomed dogs as well as families, and ran an ice-cream and takeaway kiosk next door for anyone who wanted only a cone or a snack to take down to the sand. In good weather, few tables on this part of the coast were better sited.
Finding the site today
The site is on Bournemouth Beach at Southbourne (BH6 4BE), at the calmer, more local end of the seafront well away from the crowded central beaches; get there down St Catherine's Path or by walking along the promenade. With Bistro on the Beach gone, there is no menu, booking number or opening hours to look up. Anyone coming down to eat should head for SoBo Beach or one of the other cafés and kiosks along the Southbourne front, and watch BCP Council announcements for news on the permanent venue.
