High above Boscombe's seafront, clifftop gardens and grassland extend into the Boscombe and Southbourne Overcliff Local Nature Reserve, offering a quieter, wilder contrast to the pier and beach below. Rather than a formal ornamental garden, this is somewhere to enjoy a breezy walk with expansive views, and it's worth the climb up from the sand for the outlook back over the bay.
History
Originally opened in 1900, the Cliff Gardens forming the core of the reserve reflect the Victorian and Edwardian habit of landscaping Bournemouth's clifftops into promenading spaces for visitors. Moving inland from the sea-facing cliff gardens, you find more sheltered, Italianate planting. The wider area gained formal status as a Local Nature Reserve in 2007, linking the historic gardens to a larger area of clifftop and grassland now recognised as a Site of Nature Conservation Interest.
Wildlife & what to see
Spanning nearly 23 acres, the reserve provides a real refuge for wildlife wedged between town and sea. Birdlife spans Dartford warblers, stonechats, kestrels and greenfinches, and warmer days reveal wall lizards and green lizards, frequently spotted sunbathing on the walls of the zig-zag path at Portman Ravine. The most unusual inhabitants may be the small herd of British feral goats that graze the steep slopes around Honeycomb Chine, kept there deliberately to manage vegetation. Throughout the reserve, the clifftop offers some of the bay's finest views, reaching east across Poole Bay towards Old Harry Rocks and the Purbeck Hills.
Visiting
Open access and free of charge, the reserve has no fixed hours, making it a suitable destination at any time of day or year. Hard-surfaced paths cover its clifftop and grassland sections, giving it better wheelchair and pushchair access than most of Bournemouth's wooded chines. Dog walking is easily the most common activity here, and guided walks are occasionally organised through the year for those keen to learn more about the reserve's ecology.
