Step through the door on Christchurch Road and you are in a room decked from floor to ceiling in silent-film nostalgia: black-and-white portraits fill the walls, framed newspaper cuttings hang between them, and the whole building buzzes with the sense of a night about to happen. In Boscombe, Chaplins has come to mean a proper evening out. Alehouse, cocktail bar, restaurant and music venue share one sprawling building, and the place wears its independence proudly.
The food
Home cooking is the kitchen's foundation, with a menu that blends British pub favourites and European-inspired dishes, built around locally sourced produce where it can be and topped up with seasonal specials each day. The upstairs Modern Times restaurant, a calmer space than the bar beneath it, is where most of the sit-down dining happens, while a smokehouse strand to the wider offer caters for anyone wanting slow-cooked meats. The kitchen keeps shorter hours than the bar and they vary across the week, so look at the website before turning up hungry.
It is drink, though, that made the venue's name. A rotating selection of real ales and craft ciders is always on, and every summer the bar stages a festival with dozens of casks lined up at once. Upstairs a full cocktail menu means a hand-pulled pint in the garden and something mixed over ice are both on the table.
The setting
The building is more warren than single room, and that is much of its charm. Chaplins Bar itself and the Modern Times restaurant are upstairs; the Cellar Bar below is darker and closer to the stage, and it is here that live music lives. More recent additions, such as the steampunk-styled Firehouse garden bar, have opened up further corners to discover, and the ornate garden, hung with fairy lights and scattered with vintage lampposts, is at its best on a warm Boscombe afternoon.
There is something on seven nights a week, and it isn't only bands. Live music leads, with a Wednesday open mic from around nine handing the stage to newcomers, and the calendar is always changing. Entry arrangements vary from event to event, so check ahead if you're coming for a particular gig.
Where it is
The address is 529 Christchurch Road, BH1 4AG, on the main road through Boscombe. The Royal Arcade, the high street and the O2 Academy are all within a few minutes on foot, and Boscombe Pier and the beach are about a five-minute walk downhill, so the bar makes a natural finish to an afternoon on the sand. Frequent buses along Christchurch Road connect it to Bournemouth town centre one way and Christchurch the other.
The venue has no car park of its own. Street parking nearby and Boscombe's public car parks are the usual choices, though on a busy night a bus or taxi spares you the search for a space.

The restaurant and individual areas can be booked on request, and the venue doubles as an event space for private hire, so ringing ahead makes sense for groups or celebrations. Gig nights and sunny garden afternoons pull in a crowd, so come early if you want a table.
