Chez Fred has been part of Westbourne life since 1989, a fish and chips restaurant run by one family in this corner of Bournemouth for more than three decades. Three generations have had a hand in it, and that long history comes through in the small things: fish that is sourced with care, chips cooked properly and a welcome that makes little distinction between a regular and someone through the door for the first time. It is a neighbourhood institution that has built its name gradually, year on year.
What's on the menu
At the centre of the menu sit cod and haddock in a light, crisp batter, cooked to order and served with chips, which is precisely what you would want. The fish is responsibly sourced, and a specials board announces the day's catch, whether plaice, hake, red gurnard or rock, depending on what the boats have brought in. What sets the place apart is the unlimited chips: staff keep refilling your plate, so leaving hungry is not an option. Add the usual extras, mushy peas, curry sauce and puddings such as sticky toffee, and you have a proper chippy meal eaten at a table.
The menu has more breadth than you might assume. Lunchtime specials and daily deals keep prices sensible, there is a children's menu called the Sprat Pack, and vegetarians are catered for, with at least one vegan dish included. On Tuesdays, at both lunch and dinner, the kitchen fries its fish in gluten-free batter using dedicated pans, a considerate arrangement that makes Chez Fred a dependable option for coeliacs on that day of the week.
Inside
The dining room at Chez Fred is homely and straightforward rather than showy, a comfortable space with no pretensions where the food takes centre stage. This is a proper restaurant, not a takeaway counter with a couple of stools, although takeaway and delivery are both available if you would prefer to eat somewhere else. The atmosphere is lively and good-natured, particularly in the evening; bookings are not taken, tables are given out on a first-come, first-served basis, and a short queue at the busiest times is simply part of the routine.
Finding it
Chez Fred is at 8-10 Seamoor Road, in the centre of Westbourne's village-style shopping quarter, surrounded by the Victorian arcade, delis and independent shops. It lies just west of Bournemouth town centre, with the West Cliff and the beaches near Alum Chine within easy reach, so it fits neatly into a day at the seaside. Our guide to Westbourne covers the streets around it in more detail.
Practical details
The restaurant opens for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday and closes on Sunday and Monday, though times can change, so confirm the current hours before you set off. Since no reservations are taken, the simplest way to avoid queuing is to arrive slightly ahead of the Friday and Saturday evening rush. Westbourne has on-street parking and public car parks close by. The restaurant's own website is the best place to check the latest menu, hours and daily specials, and for other places to eat along this part of the coast, have a look through the rest of our food & drink guide.
