Frieda's is a traditional English tearoom on Stafford Road, a short step from Bournemouth town centre, a place of vintage crockery, tiered cake stands and slow afternoons. Its reputation has been built on afternoon tea done properly rather than a quick coffee, and that focus is visible in everything from the finger sandwiches to the list of loose-leaf teas.
Afternoon tea, done properly
The headline offering is the Classic Afternoon Tea (from £19 per person): freshly made finger sandwiches, warm fruit scones with jam and Cornish clotted cream, and a stand of handmade cakes, all presented on genuine vintage china. Those wanting something more indulgent can choose a bottomless Prosecco option or a Luxury Champagne tea for two. There is a brunch menu too, which includes Frieda's Famous Full English, eggs Benedict and pancakes.
Dietary options
Gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan and vegetarian diets are all catered for in the kitchen; vegan cheese substitutes are offered for a small supplement, and vegetarian dishes are clearly flagged on the menu. It's worth raising when you book for a group with different requirements.
A change of hands, same name
The tearoom was opened by Frieda in 2011, and she ran it for more than a decade before passing it to new owner Cathy in late 2024. The name was kept because, in the new team's words, the tearoom just wouldn't be the same without it. In 2023 the business even ran a "Tea Bus", serving afternoon tea on a moving vehicle along the coast, although that was a one-off rather than a regular event.
Good to know
Afternoon tea must be pre-booked, and the currently published hours cover only Wednesday and Saturday; check the website before visiting, since the days can change with the seasons. Parking is available at the rear, and the tearoom takes private hire bookings for hen parties, baby showers and small celebrations.
