Hot Rocks, a two-storey surf-themed restaurant and cocktail bar set into Pier Approach, has been a fixture of Bournemouth seafront since 1997, with the pier and the beach only a few steps away. Independent and family-run, it has a relaxed, holiday-by-the-sea atmosphere and is among the longest-established names along this part of the front.
What's on the menu
Few seafront restaurants cover as much ground. Authentic wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas share the menu with steaks and ribs, fresh seafood, Indian and Thai curries, noodles with an Indonesian influence, pasta and Mexican dishes, among them a "special recipe" chilli, as well as burgers led by the signature Big Kahuna. History and atmosphere
The story begins with John Green, a local surfer and surfboard shaper whose Hot Rocks surf shop was already trading in Bournemouth when, in 1996, he won council backing to replace a small beachfront unit with a two-storey restaurant in American-diner style, seeing off proposals from chains along the way. The building was badly damaged by fire in October 2021 and has since been rebuilt. On the first floor, the Ocean Lounge cocktail bar keeps separate hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, hosts DJs at weekends and can be hired privately for parties and corporate events.
Practical details
Food is served in the ground-floor restaurant from midday until 9pm, seven days a week, although hours change with the season, so ring ahead to confirm. There's also a beachside click-and-collect takeaway service, ordered online. Because Hot Rocks stands right on Pier Approach, it fits easily around a stroll along the seafront or an afternoon spent on the beach.
