New Zealand Gardens is a small and modest public garden in the centre of Christchurch whose name carries a story you might not expect. It lies directly beside Druitt Gardens, which is far better known, inside the town's Conservation Area, and offers a quiet pause on the route between the High Street and Christchurch Priory.
Why "New Zealand"?
Christchurch, Dorset and Christchurch, New Zealand share more than a name: the two hold a sister-city relationship, and the New Zealand city is one of several twin towns, the others being Aalen in Germany, Saint-Lô in France and Tatabánya in Hungary. The garden was set aside as a marker of that link, a small, physical acknowledgement of the town's namesake on the far side of the globe. It sits among the ordinary green spaces of the town centre rather than being promoted as a headline attraction.
Visiting
Like the other small parks and gardens scattered through Christchurch town centre, New Zealand Gardens has open access and costs nothing to enter. There is no ticket and no fixed opening time; you simply walk in as you go by. With few facilities, it works best as a short, calm diversion rather than somewhere to spend the afternoon.
