Billed as the South's first cat cafe, it pairs a mug of speciality coffee with the company of a room full of rescue cats. The food
Far from token salads, the kitchen here runs fully plant-based and puts real effort into its warm plates: vegan mac and cheese, a homemade vegetarian burger, falafel wraps with houmous, Dorset cheese sandwiches, smashed avocado and honest comfort food such as baked beans on toast or a loaded jacket potato. For lighter appetites, there's nachos, a soup of the day or salads built on sourdough, wraps or gluten-free bases to graze on.
Drinks are a real highlight. Local roaster Bad Hand supplies the coffee, pulled by trained baristas, with soya, oat and coconut milk alternatives available. Fresh juices and smoothies come from the in-house Lion Bar, including house creations like the Lionizer and the Meow-jito, plus milkshakes and speciality teas. Chocolate brownies, scones with jam and coconut cream, and daily bakes cover anyone after something sweet. Requests for gluten-free and other dietary needs are handled as they come.
The setting
The cafe spreads across two floors, built around its resident cats, a family of rescues named Clifford, Liquorice, Bear, Noodle and Poppet among others. Many came from difficult backgrounds, so the space is arranged with their comfort in mind, offering quiet corners, enrichment and places to retreat when they'd rather avoid the attention.
Sanctuary describes the mood better than snack bar, calm rather than bustling. From the plant-based menu through to its focus on welfare, adoption and community projects, the ethos is consistent throughout. Solo visitors after a peaceful hour, friends catching up, and anyone who simply misses having a cat around all find it suits them. This is a warm, gentle spot to while away some time if you love animals and slow mornings.

Pause Cat Cafe is located at 119 Old Christchurch Road, BH1 1EP, on the main pedestrianised stretch climbing away from the square at the heart of central Bournemouth town centre. Close enough to Bournemouth railway station, the central bus routes and the seafront to fit neatly into a day of shopping or a walk down to the beach. If driving in, public car parks nearby cover the town centre.
