Rockwater sits right on the sand at Branksome Chine, the kind of spot that pulls you in for a quick morning coffee and somehow holds onto you until the sun goes down. The ground floor houses a relaxed bar and kitchen, a glass-fronted roof terrace sits above, and a handful of shacks trade along the promenade outside. Nearly every seat shares the same outlook: sea, sand and the long curve of the Dorset coastline.
The food
Rather than fixed sittings, the kitchen runs to an all-day rhythm. Breakfast gets going early downstairs in the bar and kitchen, moving into a main menu at lunch that continues through the evening, with pizza offered separately and a daily cream tea slot in the mid-afternoon. Puddings have their own menu, and younger diners get dedicated children's breakfast and main course options.
Up on the roof terrace, a separate seasonal menu focuses on smaller sharing plates, alongside its own weekend breakfast service. Down on the promenade, the shacks keep it simple: coffee, cold drinks, snacks, ice cream and light bites you can take straight down to the sand. Menus shift with the seasons and each area runs to its own hours, so check the website before heading out.
The setting
The roof terrace is the star turn. Thanks to its retractable roof, which opens in fine summer weather and closes over when it's wet, the sea views stay just as good whether the sun's out or it's pouring. By day it's a lively, sociable space, turning adults-only after 8pm. The ground-floor bar and kitchen has a softer, more relaxed feel, with sofas and a casual atmosphere that doesn't mind sandy feet or damp swimwear.
Food is only part of the story here. Throughout the year the venue runs a full events programme, taking in live music, supper clubs, craft workshops, sip-and-paint evenings and even a chess club, on top of wellness classes, sea swimming membership and private hire. It suits a post-swim breakfast, a leisurely long lunch or an evening drink watching the sun go down just as well.
Where it is
Rockwater is on Pinecliff Road, BH13 6LP, at the foot of Branksome Chine on the Poole side of the boundary with Bournemouth. The promenade runs right past, making it an easy walk or cycle from Bournemouth Pier in one direction and Sandbanks in the other, while the wooded chine path leads down to the beach from the road above. Good to know
Booking ahead is recommended for both the roof terrace and the bar and kitchen, although walk-ins are accepted; the shacks and outdoor deck run first come, first served. Groups larger than ten should reach out to the bookings team beforehand. Dogs on leads are welcome throughout, as long as they stay off the tables and chairs and clear of the walkways. Parking is the trickiest part in peak season: the adjoining Branksome Dene Chine car park is small, while Beach Road, Western Road and Ravine Road pay-and-display car parks lie a short walk away.
