Ask when to visit Bournemouth and the honest answer is that there is no single best time. It depends on whether you want busy beaches and events or space, quiet and lower prices. Here is how the year divides up.
Summer (June to August)
High season. The beaches are at their busiest, the sea is warm enough for a swim, and the diary is full, the well-known Air Festival and seafront fireworks included. It also means the highest accommodation prices of the year and the largest crowds, so book well in advance.
Spring (March to May)
An underrated season, and a lovely one. The gardens fill with colour, the coast paths are empty, and mild, bright days suit walking without any of the summer bustle. Prices are kinder as well.
Autumn (September to November)
The sea keeps its warmth into September, and the softer light shows the clifftop walks at their best. The calendar fills with arts and food events, and more often than not the beach is nearly yours alone.
Winter (December to February)
The quietest season and the most atmospheric. December brings the festive markets and the Christmas Tree Wonderland to light up the town, and the new year belongs to brisk beach walks and cosy cafés. For a bargain break, this is the moment.
Our advice
Choose July or August for sun and buzz; choose late spring or early autumn for value and calm. Whenever you come, look at what's on for your dates and book accommodation early. Our seasonal guides cover each season in more depth.
