Toward the end of each summer, Bournemouth's bay becomes the setting for the Pier to Pier Swim, a mass open-water event that sends swimmers across the sea between the town's two piers.
The swim
Swimmers cover the stretch of Poole Bay between Boscombe Pier and Bournemouth Pier, well over a kilometre of open water. Safety marshals oversee the whole route, drawing club swimmers alongside people taking on a personal fundraising challenge.
Watching and supporting
Watching costs nothing, with strong views available from both piers and the promenade between them. Money raised typically supports lifesaving and local good causes, adding a genuine community feel to the morning.
